Over the next several weeks, Kate watched the flirtatious friendship between Ben and Cannon develop into something more substantial. Although Ben still would not admit there was anything going on, Kate saw the subtle glances, the hands brushing one another too frequently and for too long, and the unaccounted absences from meal breaks or social time.

Ben and Cannon weren’t the only ones in Kate’s circle of friends who seemed to be developing a romantic relationship. Fielder and Lapis were practically inseparable, Odessa and Anzil were continuously flirting, and even Tevan was the object of affection of his Earthling study partner, Abdalla, though Kate wasn’t sure if Tevan didn’t notice or didn’t care.

Although the amorous pairings allowed Kate’s free time to be used to catch up with her Titan, it also left her feeling lonely. Without the distraction her friendships offered, she often found herself homesick, and too regularly she wondered if her mother was okay.

Her only reprise from the loneliness were her dreams. She was meeting with James in her old house a few times a week. Although initially she thought her dreams were nothing more than her subconscious desire for home and companionship, she soon changed her mind when she woke with bruises after a Combat lesson from James.

Kate’s nightly lessons and time spent with her Titan significantly helped her catch up with the tutored students. It also established a steady routine for her as the first session of classes flew past, and the end of session Comprehensive Tests loomed nearer.

“I can’t believe we have Comps in three weeks,” Kate said as they sat at breakfast one morning.

“I know,” Tevan said. “I’m so excited.”

“Of course you are,” Ben replied. “You remember everything.”

“You wouldn’t mind tests either if you studied,” Tevan said.

“I study.”

“No, you don’t. You’re too occupied with my sister.”

Ben shot a quick glance towards Kate, who pretended not to notice.

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Ben said. “Cannon and I are just pals.”

Cannon sat down beside her brother. “What are you guys talking about?”

“Comps,” Kate said quickly.

“Ugh, don’t remind me,” Cannon said.

“You seem like you’re doing well,” Kate replied. “Sven said you are head of the class in your Harmonics and Words of Power group.”

“I’m okay,” Cannon replied. “But I could use some help in Galaxography. Feeling up to tutoring, bro?”

“Hey guys,” Wick interrupted as he joined them. “Guess what I just heard.”

“What?” Ben asked.

“There’s going to be a mission.”

“No way,” Tevan replied. “We’re only three months into training. It’s too early.”

“I know that’s the way it’s supposed to be,” Wick said. “But that’s not what’s happening.”

“You’re crazy,” Tevan said. “I don’t care what you heard, it is preposterous to think they would send us on a mission this soon. There are rules, Wick.”

“Right,” Wick replied. “But something—”

“No,” Tevan interrupted. “Rules. No missions until after two full terms.”

“I know the rules, Tevan.”

“If you know the rules, why would you believe some ridiculous rumor about a mission after one term?”

“Because it was the Headmistress who said it.”

“What?” Kate asked.

Wick smiled broadly. “I was walking down the hall and I heard her talking about it.
